How to choose Rockwell AB soft starter ?
When selecting an AB soft starter, it is usually based on the following points:
1.Lower starting torque application
2. Light or moderate load applications
3. Full speed operation
4. Reduce mechanical wear and system damage
5. Limiting the current is the main reason for the starting method
AB soft starters save costs compared to AC drives in some applications. AB soft starters have a silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) that connects the AC input line to the motor. In contrast, AC drives have more components-usually diode front ends, DC buses, and insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs). More components mean more costs.
AB soft starters can also provide considerable physical size and volume savings through AC drives. Add-ons in AC drives are more expensive and they take up more space physically. Similar to the cost savings, the energy saving of AB soft starters depends on the rated power:
Below 1.37 amps: 45mm soft starters are much narrower than AC drives of the same current
2.100Hp (75kW): Most AC drives occupy 400% more space than typical soft starters
3.30Hp (22kW), 500Hp (375kW), 800Hp (560kW) and 1000Hp (710kW) are the most significant savings: volume savings of 500% to 1000%
When running at full speed and properly loaded, AB soft starters are more efficient than AC drives. A soft starter can achieve efficiencies as high as 99.5% to 99.9% through its size and applied three-phase voltage. When the startup process is complete, the soft starter with integrated bypass is pulled into the internal contactor. The SCR no longer ignites and current flows through the contactor. This is very effective.
The efficiency of an AC drive is usually 95% to 98%. During start-up, operation, and stop, active components such as IGBTs are always on, resulting in reduced drive efficiency. However, because AC drives control voltage and frequency, there are more opportunities for energy savings.
When running at full speed and properly loaded, soft starters are more efficient than AC drives. The soft starter can save a lot of cost, size and energy of the AC drive. AC drives can be 1.5 to 7 times the cost of a soft starter. AC drives can be 2.5 to 10 times the size of a soft starter.
We know that soft starters are suitable for some applications, but AC drives can work in almost a wider range of applications. But using soft starters instead of AC drives in the right applications can achieve significant cost savings, reduce physical size / volume, and save energy and improve efficiency.
So to get the above benefits, the application characteristics are very important when we choose a soft starter or an AC drive. Both soft starters and AC drives can start motors with lower voltages and currents, but the unique characteristics of the application determine which is the best choice, allowing the size of the soft starter or drive to be adjusted.
In short, no matter which motor control method you choose, you must consider installation, commissioning, and other precautions for additional filters or circuit protection when specifying a soft starter or AC drive.
